(GAINESVILLE, GA) The DECA Chapter at Lanier Charter Career Academy and the Hospitality High program enjoyed some hands-on practice at hospitality today at the State Capitol. The group of DECA students from LCCA represented the Lake Lanier Conventions & Visitor Bureau at the State Capitol encouraging legislators to “Stretch the Budget” for tourism dollars during the annual Tourism Day at the Capitol. The students helped in the presentation of an honorary check for almost $850 million representing the revenue to the state of Georgia which comes from tourism. The students distributed rubber-band wallets to the people at the Capitol promoting the need to stretch the tourism budget and encourage continued tourism to Georgia. Groups of students also visited with the Representatives, Senators, and other elected officials around the state delivering baskets with information about the importance of the tourism in Georgia. Students were recognized by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle for their visit to the Senate to view the announcement of the tourism resolution recognizing the importance of tourism to the state. Eliza Paris, State VP of Finance for DECA from North Hall High School, had the opportunity to meet several lawmakers in person to encourage the tourism dollar protection and get in a plug for the upcoming legislative luncheon for CTAE. Eliza met with the Secretary of the State in his office to promote stretching the budget. Eliza introduced herself to Rep. Mike Coan who she had been contacting to join the CTSOs at the legislative luncheon. The DECA students are members of the Discovering Hospitality & Tourism class at Lanier Charter Career Academy as well as interns in the Hospitality High program. Many of the students have career plans in the hospitality and culinary arts fields with future college and career plans in these areas. With their future interest at stake, the students had the opportunity to impact their own success today by encouraging legislators to protect the number two industry in Georgia. Tourism generates millions of dollars to Georgia every year creating jobs and offsetting the tax burden for the Georgia citizens. For every $1 spent in Georgia to promote tourism, the state receives $8 in return from visitors to the states’ many attractions.
